1. Recall Overview & Use Cases
Much of the time, PR's challenge is to keep a brand, product, event or person fresh and front-of-mind so audiences know where to go when they are ready to act. That may be some time in the future.
There are tangible things that PRs can do to make this more likely - for example, trying to ensure that their client or organisation is:
- Featured in article headlines rather than hidden at the bottom
- Mentioned lots of times instead of just once (or not at all - surveys anyone?)
- Discussed in a strongly positive tone rather than neutral of negative
Recall is the likelihood that an average consumer will remember a brand after reading online coverage. It's a blended score based all online coverage added to a report.
For example, if Recall score is 10%, there is a very low likelihood that readers will remember the brand or call-to-action, and if it's 90% then there is a very high likelihood. As PR's, we are aiming for a high score!
Why Recall is useful
PRs use Recall to:
- Demonstrate that PR provides value beyond the duration of a finite campaign
- Quickly identify issues and address them (e.g. lower Recall)
- Compare the performance of different Brand Keywords side-by-side
- Make more informed decisions about media strategy and tactics going forward
2. How we Measure Recall
The process of detecting Recall works as follows:
- Online coverage is added to a Releasd report
- We combine factors including Mentions, Prominence and Sentiment to generate a Recall score for each article based on the Brand Keywords you add
- Recall is averaged and plotted on a bar chart
3. How to add a Recall Chart (Evaluation Widget)
i) First, add some Online Coverage to your report
Drag on the Online Coverage widget and enter some URLs.
You can learn how to do this here.
ii) Add an Evaluation widget to your report
You can find this in the Toolbar.
iii) Click 'Add Evaluation'
And then 'Add charts':
iv) Select the chart, and then add it to the widget
v) Manage Brand Keywords
A Brand Keyword in this context refers to the specific entity that has been promoted through PR - such as a company, campaign, product, service, person or event.
It's what you expect to appear in your media coverage, and what will be evaluated in your report.
Brand Keywords must be spelled accurately, but are not case sensitive.
Examples of Brand Keywords:
✅ Adobe Acrobat or adobe acrobat (a product, using upper or lower case letters)
✅ Levi’s (a brand including the correct apostrophe)
✅ Dreamforce (an event)
✅ Jensen Huang (a person)
Avoid misspellings, Key Messages, Quotes or Backlinks!
❌ Levis (a brand without the correct apostrophe)
❌ Sales of hot sauces grew by 30% last year (Key Message)
❌ "This is a unique collaboration between two brands and we are delighted with the results" (Spokesperson Quote)
❌ www.example.com (Backlink)

Adding Brand Keywords to a chart:
- New Brand Keywords can be added here
- Brand Keywords that have been selected for analysis in this chart will appear here
- Brand Keywords that have been selected in other charts in this report are shown here.
Note: When Brand Keywords are added to any chart in a report, they count towards the quota that can be analysed in a single report - and are displayed here. If you have reached your quota, you will see a warning and can either delete a Brand Keyword, or upgrade - Recently analysed Brand Keywords are displayed here
vi) Optional: add a caption, reorder or delete the chart
vii) Finally, click 'Done' to save the widget
The chart will automatically update as you add online coverage to the report.
4. How to add Recall Total Metrics (Summary Metrics Widget)
The Summary Metrics widget displays total figures in a visual infographic.
i) Add a Summary Metrics widget to your report
You can find this in the Toolbar.
Click to open the widget and add metrics.
ii) Scroll to the Online Coverage section
Select the total Metrics you'd like to add. Options include overall Recall, and Recall for individual Brand Keywords.
iii) Save the widget
Once added, click to save the widget. Metrics will automatically update alongside evaluation.
